About us
Based in North Yorkshire, Skipton Building Society is the UK’s fourth largest building society, with approximately 772,000 members, over £14bn of assets and a national presence represented by its network of over 100 branches nationwide.
As an innovator in the field of mortgage and savings products, Skipton is in a strong financial position, being well funded, well capitalised and profitable with good liquidity and asset quality.
Why mutual matters
Skipton Building Society is a mutual organisation which operates in the interests of our members. We are run by a Board of directors who are responsible for deciding our strategy and safeguarding our assets so that future members have access to cheaper mortgages and competitive savings accounts.
Being a mutual means most customers with a mortgage or savings account are members and have certain rights to vote and receive information. They can also attend and speak at our AGM. Each member has one vote regardless of how much money they have invested or borrowed, or how many accounts they hold.
As a building society we differ greatly from banks that are listed on the stock market and are owned by and run for their shareholders. Skipton has no shareholders requiring an annual dividend.
This enables us to run on much lower costs which allows cheaper mortgages and better savings rates than banks.
The Skipton Group
The Society stands apart from its counterparts as the parent to 20 subsidiary companies providing financial services and related advice to members, customers and businesses across the country. Two of Skipton’s largest subsidiaries are Homeloan Management Ltd (HML) and Skipton Financial Services Ltd (SFS). HML is now Europe’s largest independent outsourcing company and SFS is listed as one of the top 25 financial advisers in the UK. Connells is also a Skipton subsidiary and is now one of the largest and most successful estate agency groups in the country, with a network of over 500 branches throughout the UK. In total, The Skipton Group now employs approximately 8,000 staff.
