When 'I think you’ll say no' became a yes

Some cases look like a dead end before you’ve even started

One broker recently picked up the phone to Skipton with a New Build case they weren’t convinced would get off the ground. In fact, their first conversation with Skipton BDM Mitchell Jackson started with the words: “I think you’re going to say no to this… but I need to check.”

On paper, the client’s income didn’t fit neatly into standard criteria. It would have been easy to stop there.

Instead, Mitchell took the time to understand the wider circumstances before working closely with underwriter Jenna Jackson. Together, they looked beyond the figures on the application and assessed the case as a whole.

Less than 24 hours later, the mortgage was agreed in principle

Reflecting on the experience, the broker said:

“One of the best parts of this job is working with lenders who are willing to look beyond just the numbers on paper and take a genuine common-sense approach.”

They added:

“It’s so refreshing to see Mitchell and Jenna fully embracing Skipton’s ‘Let’s Find A Way’ approach to lending.”

For the broker, the experience reinforced the value of having a conversation rather than assuming the answer will be no.

Every application is different. Sometimes the detail behind the numbers matters just as much as the numbers themselves. That’s why our BDMs and underwriters work together to understand the full picture before making a decision.

If you’ve got a case that doesn’t quite fit the mould, speak to your Skipton BDM. We’ll take the time to understand the circumstances and explore what’s possible.
